Treating Dandruff in Kids September 17, 2010
The occurrence of the dandruff among the kids in not common and when present, it is characterized by itching and flaking of the scalp. It may be related to the skin infections such as eczema or Seborrhoea dermatitis. Some other possible causes of presence of scalp flakes in kids include dry skin; build up of hair products and peeling sunburn.
You can follow the below mentioned tips for preventing and treating the dandruff.
You can brush the scalp gently with a soft bristles hairbrush. The soft tooth hair comb is required as it would not lead to scratching and irritation and cleans the scalp by loosening the flakes on the scalp. You should do it regularly before bathing or showering daily. You should also select a mild shampoo free of additives like perfumes or alcohol. A kid with suspected dandruff is required to wash his hair daily with mild shampoo.
You should take proper care of the kid’s hairs by massaging the shampoo in the affected regions where there is presence of flakes. You should ensure to rinse the shampoo thoroughly after the massage so that it does not stay back into your hair and further exacerbates the symptoms. You can apply shampoo to the hairs quite frequently for treating the dandruff. If the normal shampoo is not effective you can go for specially formulated anti dandruff shampoo.
Ideally, your shampoo should consist of Zinc Pyrithione or Salicylic Acid. These shampoos should be used after consultation with the physician. In addition to this, there are various tar-based shampoos that provide relief from the psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. You can also use an after-shampoo conditioner for restoring the moisture to your scalp and hair. Also, you should ensure that you get exposure to sunlight for about 20 minute daily for curing dandruff in kids.
